Billabong Zoo opened in 1986, primarily as a breeding centre for koalas, together with a wallaby and kangaroo hand-feeding area.
Mark and Danena Stone became the new owners in 2003, with 40 years’ experience in the zoo industry and continually put their life and soul into the wellbeing and care of their animals as well as their commitment to growing the zoo’s activities and enjoyment for all of their visitors. Family run and operated, this beautiful zoo is filled with a diverse range of Australian and exotic animals and birds that are known as their Ambassadors.
The friendly owners and staff are passionate about all of their animals and the work they do for conservation through education.
Billabong Zoo has been voted the region’s Top Attraction on a number of years as well as receiving other Awards for service and value.
Today the Zoo exhibits over 80 species and cares for over 220 animals. It is open every day of the year (except Christmas Day) from 9am to 5pm. And throughout the year holds functions and events after 5pm.
Education is fundamental to the Zoo’s ethos. Every day there are Zoo Talks with keeper presentations and a Reptile Show at the weekend and during school holidays. All Free and inclusive of the Entrance Fee.
There are also a number of truly memorable Up-close Encounters with a number of the Zoo’s animals available to visitors. Over the decades the Zoo’s gardens and vegetation has matured and been nurtured to provide shade, picturesque picnic areas and a really relaxing atmosphere.
Billabong Zoo invests heavily in its Schools Programme from pre-school to Year 12 and liaises closely with teachers and educators to ensure information is kept up-to-date and in-line with the current curriculum.
As the role of Zoos worldwide changes – Billabong Zoo is at the forefront as Ambassadors for Wildlife, successfully blending the three elements of a successful modern Zoo:
- Recreation
- Education
- Conservation
In 2018, Billabong Zoo renovated the entrance building, café and corporate room. Light, airy and modern facilities welcome visitors from all over Australia as well as overseas.
The facilities align with any of the top city zoos around NSW, and accessibility taken into consideration with everything including the reception/entrance, toilets and café area. Top city zoo combined with a local community-minded attitude and friendly staff to help.
A Kids party room (Pobblebonk), named after a native frog, has been created and tailored especially for children’s birthday party celebrations. The room is also available for hire by parent groups to meet up for a small fee.
As part of the renovations, there is now an elegant boardroom with kitchen and boardroom facilities available for hire to corporates for meetings with up to 12 participants. There is also an alfresco dining extension to our cafe that's well-shaded, comfortable and airy. The Meeting Point Cafe menu has been improved with flavours and ingredients from around the world being incorporated into their dishes to embrace the diversity of visitors to the zoo and to also entice and delight its locals.
We have recently completed construction on a beautiful, sophisticated large function centre with high ceilings and a feature fire place to heat up those chilly winter evenings. The large function area will accommodate large parties of up to 120 people and will include corporate functions, private parties and wedding receptions.
Night zoos will also become a future part of the zoo’s offerings.
Make sure you check in regularly to see what’s new at the zoo!
