School Excursions

Fully guided from K to Year 12

Billabong Zoo’s school excursion programmes are tailored to meet the needs of teachers, the school curriculum and level of your students.  We offer an ideal learning environment and experience as we have run these programmes over many years and continually look to update and improve them. We care for over 200 animals of 80 species throughout our 10 acre wildlife park, set in beautiful gardens with koi ponds. We also have educational and informative Zoo Keeper Tours available.

Our programmes are set up for the following student categories:

  • K to Y2
  • Y3 to Y6
  • Y7 to Y12

We are happy to incorporate any special requests and place emphasis on particular subjects in our guided Zoo Keeper tours.

We look forward to welcoming you and your students to visit Billabong Zoo in Port Macquarie.

Itinerary

To make the most out of your school excursion to Billabong Zoo, allowing time for morning/afternoon tea and to enjoy our animal experiences, please aim to arrive between 9:30am and 10am and leave between 1:30pm and 2:15pm.

Zoo Keepers will take students on a tour of our zoo, with opportunities for hand-feeding the Kangaroos and Wallabies, patting a Koala, meeting a Dingo and an up-close Reptile presentation. For each species the Keepers will discuss habitat, diet, survival characteristics, conservation status and many other interesting facts. The talks are all geared to the age of the students.

There will also be opportunities to study:

  • Meerkats
  • Wombats
  • Penguins
  • Australian and exotic birds
  • Spider Monkeys
  • Red Pandas
  • Big Cat exhibit (Cheetahs, Snow Leopards and Lions)

Students will also assemble in our grandstand for the ever-popular feeding and presentation of our Monster Crocodile, Shrek.

Wet Weather

Billabong Zoo is open 7 days a week and is set up for wet weather as well as good weather. Many of our exhibits provide wet weather protection for groups and we have large undercover areas plus a large internal school’s room that we can use in extreme weather. We advise students to bring wet weather gear and warm clothing in the colder months. Refer to ‘what to bring’.

What to bring

A School Excursion to Billabong Zoo provides great memories and lots of photo opportunities. Here’s a list of what you should bring:

  • Camera, phone and video.
  • Water bottle.
  • Sunscreen.
  • Wet weather gear.
  • Warm clothing in the colder months.

Personal belongings: we recommend students and teachers keep their belongings with them at all times.
